Saturday June 15, 2002 Council Bluffs, Iowa

Another wonderful day with several great stops
The confluence of the Kansas & Missouri Rivers
(L&C June 27-29, 1804)

The Western Trails Center at Council Bluffs, IA, where Patricia told us about the plants we saw

These are only a few. We will present more with each day's web page.
From Sally & Marylinda

After leaving the Western Trails Museum we visited Fort Atkinson Park Historic State just west of the "Council Bluffs" where Lewis and Clark held their first council with the Oto & Missouri Indians on August 3, 1804. The reconstructed fort (originally built in 1820 and named for General Atkinson) forms a background for Sally Knutson and Marylinda Wheeler as they display the expedition flag. Fort Atkinson was the first military post west of the Missouri Biver.

After dinner we had the honor of being the first Elderhostel to visit a hilltop monument above the Missouri River memorializing this first great council. We brought out our flag and peace pipe and duplicated the monument with Connie Gaul, Joanne Carr, George Carr, and Chuck Gaul (below) OK

Jean Healey with one of the Expedition hats and  Don Brennan with our flag.
