May 8, 2004.  This group shot will be our header for the next few days. it was taken at the Western Historic Trails Center in council bluffs, Iowa. ok

But our first stop our of Independence was at this statue in a park overlooking the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. The Missouri comes from the top of the picture flowing around the bend to fade off to the right. The Kansas River comes from the west, or left. Lewis and Clark camped in the point you see between the rivers.

Later in the afternoon we went to Fort Atkinson, built it 1821 to protectthe fur traders. it was only used for seven years. it is built above the river on the bluff where Lewis and Clark had their first council with the Indians, hence the name Council Bluff. The modern Iowa town, Council Bluffs, takes its name from the same incident, but it is 10 miles south of the historic location. Just added in this last year is this great bronze sculpture commemorating the occasion.

We wandered through the fort itself and were entertained and informed by a reenactor protraying a cooper, and actually building barrels.
