May 18 - Missoula, MT to Clarkston, WA -- Once in another life, when I had a husband and two teenagers, I watched the contents of our 4-bedroom home be packed in sea crates, and loaded on a moving van. these crates were taken to a port and put on a ship. when I realized Lewis and Clark took supplies equal to 3 full moving vans I knew they had a lot of "stuff." We had needed only part of one van! Of course, we had 4 people; however, it does put the amount of their supplies in terms we can understand in our modern life. Lavada Bryant.

Packer Meadows is at the summit of the Lolo Trail. on the border between Montana & Idaho. Below, at the Canoe Camp in Orofino, ID, someone asked: How many people will fit in that canoe. we found out.
Bernard DeVoto was a great historian and writer on the American West. In the introduction to his great condensation of the Lewis and Clark Journals Stephen Ambrose said of DeVoto: "He was not a cloistered scholar, he loved to get out on the trails and experience the story." As we are doing. In 1956 DeVoto's ashes were scattered in this beautiful grove along the Lochsa River, that he loved so much.

At Canoe Camp in Orofino, ID, just minutes after we heard a journal reading about the corps getting some salmon from the Nez Perce, we met a man who had just caught this beauty. Dorothea Becker re-enacts Clark receiving the fish.

On the Lolo Trail, Kent Watson interprets the natural history of the area. Diane splits us up to teach the fragmentation of the Nez Perce in various treaties beginning in 1855.
