Marge Schuler's Sketchbook

In their journals Lewis and Clark also made lots of sketches, of plants, birds, fish, their camps and boats. Painters often accompanied later Missouri River explorers, to document the landscape, most notably Karl Bodmer, who accompanied prince Maximillian of Wied in the 1830s. We are fortunate in having our own sketch artist, who documents our trip in her own unique way, Marge Schuler. Sketches are dated so you can find other information on  the main pages. Fort Atkinson, May 8, our guide was the cooper. During the last year they erected a statuary group representing the first council with Indians. Fort Atkinson is built on top of the original Council Bluff
