625...Day 5, Aug. 2: Council Bluffs, IA to Yankton, SD + 223 = 848

The day started with a wonderful ride on this keelboat replica. It is on an ox-bow lake which was a part of the Missouri River in the time of Lewis and Clark. All of us got to take a turn at steering.

Then it was on to Sgt. Floyd's monument at Sioux City. Floyd was the only corps member to die on the expedition. He was buried on a hill and in 1901 this obelisk was placed on his grave.

the last stop of the day was a walk up Spirit Mound, a hill feared by the  local Indians of 1804. Lewis and Clark and ten men walked up this hill on Aug. 25, 1804, to investigate. So we had to do it, too!

We made it, and we are standing in their footprints.
