In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark
From Illinois to the Pacific
July 26 - Aug. 12, 2015

1590...Day 9, August 3 - Medora, ND to Billings, MT  302 = 1892

Our only interpretive spot for the day is Pompeys Pillar,
where Clark, on July 25, 1806, carved his name in this massive rock.

a 100 steps takes us to the signature

Another 100 steps, (approx.) takes us to the top

where we have this magnificent view of the Yellowstone River valley.

The pillar has a long history of private and public ownership. It was saved from being cut up for road gravel a couple of times. Various attempts were made to preserve the signature. This iron grating was put up by the railroad in the 1880s

We end the day at the Clock Tower Inn in nearbyBillings, MT, with meals from Stella's
