In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark
From Illinois to the Pacific
June 19 - July 6, 2016

2240 -  Day 12, June 30:  Great Falls Area + 150 = 2390

As L&C came upstream (towards us) on June 1, 1805, they encountered a river the Mandans had not told them about. It came from the north and was almost equal in size. Whoa! Which is the real Missouri. they spent about 12 days investigating both streams and finally settled, correctly, on the stream flowing from the right. Lewis called the new river Maria's river after a cousin.

In Fort Benton we walk the riverwalk and learn about the ever faithful dog who kept watch by the railroad station for
his dead master to return.

For my money, we are standing on the selfsame rock.

Overlook of the upper portage camp.
